We have been receiving some requests from parishioners to have their homes blessed.  Monsignor Frecker and Deacon Pry are willing to come to your home for such a blessing.  Please feel free to call them for an appointment, 614-920-1563.

BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE

Our goal as a parish family is to assist the families in their time of sorrow. Some of the ways we can help are to provide transportation, child care, a meal after the funeral, watching the home while the family is at the funeral home, etc. We are looking for volunteers to help in these areas. If you can help with transportation to and from the funeral home, airport, etc., watch the home, prepare food, set-up, serve, and clean up after the funeral meal, there are sign-up sheets in the parish office, or you may call Regina Hrytzik at 614-920-1563 or Anne Brunney at home for more information.

Funeral Choir

We have formed a Funeral Choir here at Pope John XXIII. If you are interested in this

ministry, call Wanda Schwallie at home or the parish office 614-920-1564, or see Wanda between Masses. Sign-up sheets are available in the Gathering Space.

Please Click Here To Download Registration Form

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

If anyone is interested in being a part of the PSR Staff in the fall, please let us know.  We are always in need of volunteers and have numerous areas in which we could utilize your talents.  The areas include: Teaching, Teaching Assistant, Substitute Teaching, and Parking Safety Staff for both sessions. A sign up sheet will be located in the Gathering Space.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Andrea Murphy at home, or Monsignor Frecker at 614-920-1563.

NURSERY HELP NEEDED

WE NEED YOU!  We are in great need of adults to help staff our Nursery for all of the Sunday Masses. Can you give one hour of your time to help take care of our younger parishioners while their parents attend Mass? Please call Lisa Crow, Sarah Stanley or Regina in the parish office 614-920-1563, if you able to help.

LITURGICAL MINISTERS NEEDED

Have you ever considered deepening your participation in the weekend liturgy by serving in one of the roles of liturgical ministry?  We are currently recruiting additional liturgical ministers at all Masses in the role of Greater/Usher, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and Cantor/Choir.  We also need additional Altar Servers at all Masses except the Sun. 8:30 am, (where we already have 36 servers).  There is a sign up sheet in the gathering space.

NEW PEW SEATS

As you may have noticed, the wood pew seats have changed the acoustics of our worship space somewhat.  We have adjusted the sound system for the Presider, Deacon and musicians.  But since there are many Lectors some of whom have strong voices and some weaker, we are simply asking them to be attentive to how close or far away from the microphone they need to stand.  The lowering of the pew kneelers at the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer and raising them at the end is causing much more noise than before, so we are asking you to please be careful to lower and raise the kneelers as quietly as you can.  Children noises are also more noticeable, therefore we ask parents to be attentive to this as well.

FIRST RECONCILIATION REMINDER

Any parents who are expecting their children to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation this year must pick up the booklet and please see Deacon Pry after Mass for these materials. This applies also to parents whose children are enrolled in a parochial school.

ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER?

Sometimes people assume they are registered members of the parish because they attend Mass. If you have not stopped in the Parish Office to receive a registration packet you are technically not registered.

ELEVENTH ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC ON SEPTEMBER 12

Mark you calendars! The Eleventh Annual Parish Picnic will take place on Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 1:00-5:00 pm with dinner beginning at 2:00 pm.  Beginning this year the picnic will be held on the parish property. We give a tremendous THANK YOU to Peig Shackelford for hosting the picnic for the first ten years. Please sign up after Mass to volunteer to help with the picnic this year. The parish always provides the entrée and paper products. This is an ideal way to meet new fellow parishioners and also to renew old acquaintances.

THANK YOU FOR THE SCHOOL SUPPLIES

A special thank you for all of the wonderful school supplies. Monsignor Frecker was very impressed that all three boxes were filled to overflowing. The generosity of our parish is outstanding. You are all a blessing from God.

PLATINUM CLUB
The Platinum Club is having an antique boat ride on Buckeye Lake and dinner afterwards on Thursday, September 16, 2010.  We will meet in the church parking lot at 5:45 pm to carpool to this event.  Space is limited to 30 seats.  Each ticket will cost $10 and reservations must be received in the church office by Sunday, September 5.  Dinner will be on your own at the Island House.  The Platinum Club is open to all parishioners 55 and older.

VOLUNTEERS FOR HOSPITALITY SUNDAYS

We are in need of volunteers to help with Hospitality Sundays. It is a once a month commitment from June through April after one of the Masses on Sunday and is a great way to meet and serve our community. There is a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Space for anyone able to help with this Ministry.

SANDWICH SATURDAY

Hunger does not take a vacation; there are many people that need our assistance. There is always a place for new assemblers, as well as donations of bologna, cheese singles, fresh bread and Ziploc type baggies. These supplies are very much appreciated. You’ll find it’s a truly rewarding way to spend less than an hour on the fourth Saturday of each month. All are welcome to help prepare the sandwiches from 8:00-9:00 a.m. Our parish family prepares and donates thousand of sandwiches each year for the less fortunate. The display in the Gathering Space has the needed supplies. Hope to see you here.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY DVD

In the Gathering Space there are Commemorative Tenth Anniversary DVDs for sale.  The DVDs include music and pictures taken in our parish over the past ten years.  The price is $10.00.  There are over 400 pictures and the showing time is about 20 minutes.

LITURGICAL ART AND ENVIRONMENT SUB COMMITTEE

The Liturgy Committee of our parish is searching for new members to serve on its sub committee which takes care of the flowers and other decorations in church for all the special seasons and feast throughout the liturgical year.  If you are interested in helping, please call the parish office 614-920-1563.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL SUBSIDY

If you have children who will be going into Catholic School for the first time, you will have to meet with Monsignor to discuss these rates. Please call him at 614-920-1563 to make the appointment.

PLEDGE SUNDAY FOLLOW UP PHASE

Now that the initial phase of our drive is finishing, we will be beginning the follow up phase, during which we try to contact parishioners we have not yet heard from.  If you have not filled out a pledge card or BAA envelope this year, we ask you to please do so as soon as possible, (the materials are available in the Gathering Space).  This pledge information is necessary so that we may project an accurate budget for the coming fiscal year.  Thank you so very much for your generosity.

ELIZABETH MINISTRY

Have you experienced the loss of a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant or young child loss?  You are not alone.  On the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm, a group of women gather to share their feelings and pray about their losses. Whether your loss was recent or many years ago, you may still struggle with those feelings of loss.  Please join these women who take the time to remember their babies and children and look to the future as they begin to live with this loss.

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION NEWS

Please follow the parking and traffic flow instructions of the PSR attendants and be considerate for our children’s safety as they come and go for their classes. Also as Mass is being celebrated during dismissal times we ask that all students and adults stay to the west side of the building in order not to disturb those attending Mass. The PSR curriculum reinforces the Mass and Scripture readings. It is not appropriate for children to enter Mass after PSR or wait outside in the Gathering Space for their parents to finish Mass. The children need to be taught to attend the entire Mass each Sunday. Thank you for your cooperation.

H1N1 VIRUS

In anticipation of flu season we are taking some precautions during our celebration of the Liturgy.  First of all, there will be hand sanitizer available on the table in the Gathering Space, and we encourage all of our parishioners to use it before Mass.  Also hand sanitizer will be on the credence table in the sanctuary, and all Eucharistic Ministers will use it immediately before distribution of communion.  The Holy Water fonts will be cleaned and sanitized each week and fresh water will be added and blest.  We will continue the Sign of Peace, but if you choose not to shake hands, simply fold your hands and say to the person next to you, “Peace be with your.”  All should understand the reason for this and not see it as rude or unfriendly.  We will also continue the distribution of communion under both species, but you always have, as in the past, the option to receive under the form of bread only if you wish. However, it is not permissible to dip the host into the wine.

RECITATION OF THE ROSARY

Recitation of the Rosary for the Year of the Priest has been changed to the fourth Sunday of each month, in the Church after the conclusion of the 8:30 am Mass.  Please join us as we pray that God will strengthen our priests and bishops for their ministry and that they will be filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit.

RESPECT LIFE INFORMATION

Stop Abortion Funding in Health Care reform.  The U.S. Catholic Bishops urge all Catholics to act now.  Please pick up an information sheet at the Respect Life Table.

LARGE VERSION WORSHIP AID

For those who would like a large print worship aid, please ask the usher for a copy.

LITURGICAL MINISTER SCHEDULES

Please pick-up your Liturgical Minister Schedule from the table in the Gathering Space.  This helps save postage costs.  Thank you.

CANAL WINCHESTER FOOD PANTRY

The new director of the Canal Winchester Food Pantry, Janet Richardson, has announced that the Food Pantry is converting to a new model of service called the "Choice" model currently being used by many food pantries across the nation. The clients are escorted into the Food Pantry shelves which have been arranged to coincide with a card which uses USDA guidelines to guide people on choosing the correct number of items from each food group for their size of families. This allows the clients to choose their preferences and provide basic special diet needs much more than before. When certain items are needed, we can now maintain an inventory system that will be more specific to the general population of clients. This particular model also saves space in our facility, and uses less, but more specific volunteer time working with the people directly. Relationship is also our mission to the community.  Volunteers needed! Our need for increments of time as small as 2 hours a week, needed primarily on Monday and Friday afternoons from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. which is the preferred time for most of our clients. We will be having food distribution two or more (as need dictates) Wednesdays a month from 4:00 - 6:00 pm to accommodate both working clients and volunteers.

TELEVISED & RADIO MASS

Mass is televised each week day at 8:00 am & 7:00 pm from Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Birmingham, Ala. and at 10:00 am on Catholic TV from Notre Dame’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The Sunday Mass from the Basilica can be seen at 11:45 am at http://basilica.nd.edu/. Sunday Mass sponsored by the Columbus Diocese can be seen at 7:00 am on WHIZ 18 and at 7:30 am on WWHO 53. St. Gabriel Radio broadcasts the Mass on 1580 AM radio at Noon.

ART & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE

Whether you have an eye for color, knowledge of flowers or just can lend a hand to help decorate the church then the Art & Environment Committee is looking for you! We are currently planning the Easter Season and would welcome your input. Please contact Laura Ankrom if you are interested or have any questions.

NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are in need of adult volunteers for our Nursery/Child Care ages 9 mos. to 4 years old for all Masses, 8:30 am-10:15 am & 12 Noon. This ministry is open to any adult in the parish whether you have children or your children are grown. We are a very young parish and want to help our young families attend Mass comfortably.  Many hands make light work, if we have a lot of volunteers then the time commitment is not as great, please try to help. Contact Jennifer Koehler or call Regina in the parish office 614-920-1563.

CARING STITCHES

Caring Stitches volunteers meet on the third Tuesday each month from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Social Hall.  Anyone with skills pertaining to sewing, knitting, or crocheting are welcome as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these skills.  Our projects include items for the homeless, Children’s Hospital, and other charitable organizations.  Also any donations of yarns, material, batting, or fiberfill are more than appreciated.  If you have any questions please contact Maribeth Zappia.

CARING HEARTS MINISTRY

Visitation to Persons in Hospitals, Nursing/Rehabilitation Facilities and the Homebound – Government regulations surrounding the privacy of individuals in health related matters prevent Health Care Institutions from revealing patient names or circumstances to any other persons other than authorized by law.  We rely on family and friends to inform the parish office when a loved one is hospitalized, becomes a resident of a nursing home, assisted living facility, rehabilitation facility or is homebound.  Through a newly formed Caring Hearts Ministry arrangements can be made in a timely manner to visit persons who are in need of pastoral care, sacramental visits, and prayer.  Please do not hesitate to inform the parish office in health care matters related to your family or loved ones.  No one should be separated from the love of Christ!

CARE OF ALTAR LINENS

We are in need of one (1) more person to wash and iron the linens used during Mass. It is a commitment of once every eight (8) weeks. Please call Regina at the parish office 614-920-1563 or Carol Lasko if you are able to help.  Carol's phone number is listed in the Parish Directory.

OUTREACH TO INACTIVE CATHOLICS

Most of us have members of our family, friends, neighbors, or fellow workers who were once Catholic, but are no longer active in the practice of their faith.  Our parish community wants to reach out to our inactive Catholic brothers and sisters.  Available at our office are postcards that we ask you to use for this purpose.  The postcard carries the address for the website www.OnceCatholic.org.  A link to this website may also be found on our "Links" page.   This is an interactive website designed for inactive Catholics who may be seeking a deeper connection to their faith.  The postcard also carries the return address for Pope John XXIII Catholic Community as well as our phone number and website address.  Please pickup as many postcards as you need, and address them to inactive friends, relatives, etc. whom you know.  There is also a place for a personal message on the postcard if you wish.

ELIZABETH MINISTRIES

Have you lost a child, miscarried, or know someone who has?  Have you ever wanted a group of women that you can talk with and share in the miracle of the child that was given to you for a short time?   Our dream is that this ministry will help the parish truly celebrate the gift of each child conceived and born, and fully mourn each miscarriage and infant/child death. This will be a strong witness to our belief in the dignity and worth of all life! By assisting those suffering infertility, encouraging those in the adoptive process, and supporting families experiencing an infant crisis, we will be a strong and consistent voice for life in our church, community, and world.  For more information please email us at ppopejoh@insight.rr.com and put Elizabeth Ministries in the subject line.

OFFERINGS

Thank you for your continued support of our parish offertory and building fund.  During these difficult economic times, we want you to know how much we appreciate the sacrifices you are making to maintain your commitment to your parish.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Would you like to meet new people and renew old acquaintances? What better way than to volunteer to help serve donuts, coffee, tea, and juice as well as help set up or clean up for Hospitality/Name Tag Sunday on the third Sunday of each month.  We need your help. Many hands make light work and when we volunteer to help a couple of times a year the commitment really isn’t too great for those of us with limited time to give. Please call Regina in the parish office and let us know that you can help.

MILITARY UPDATE
We have added two more servicemen to our list for receiving care packages from our parish. SrA Thomas Olejniczak, cousin of parishioner Bob Zeman, recently returned from Iraq and is stationed in Utah. Shortly he will be again deployed and this time to Jordan. LCPL Keith Breeckner, son of parishioners Traci and Don Breeckner, was deployed to Iraq this August. Also, PFC John Groom was deployed to Iraq again in December. Please keep all these servicemen and their families in your daily prayers. We thank them for their courage, service and dedication and for the sacrifices of their loved ones. If any other parishioners have family members in the military and would like us to send them care packages please submit their names and addresses to Maribeth Zappia .  The Christian Services and Social Concerns Commission would like to thank you for you prayers and participation.

PRAYER FOR OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN

Lord, hold our service men and women in your loving hands. Protect them, especially those who are in harms way. Bless them and their families for these selfless acts they perform for our Country in our time of need. Be with all people who suffer from the ravages of war. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savoir. Amen. Our parish family has many family members serving in the Armed Forces as well as others supporting our troops around the world, please keep them all in our prayers.

PAPER RECYCLING

Please bring your newspapers, magazine, catalogs, office and school papers to the new yellow and green Abitibi Paper Retriever bin  located next to our trash dumpster. Isn’t the color of this bin perfect for our church?  Not only is this a wonderful Environmental stewardship program, we also earn money for the paper that is collected, and the more recyclable paper donated by our community the more funds we can raise. These funds will be used to offset the funds needed for various projects in our parish. Please put all shredded paper in a plastic bag so we don’t have all of it flying around.

DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR PAPERS FOR THE RECYCLING BIN!

LITURGICAL MINISTERS NEEDED

We are in need of Liturgical Ministers for all of the Masses but particularly the 5:00 pm and 12 Noon Masses. High School students who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation are encouraged to volunteer as a Lector or Eucharistic Minister; of course there is a need as well for Altar Servers and Greeter/Ushers. Any student who is in the fourth grade and above is encouraged to become an Altar Server. Adults are encouraged to volunteer for any of the liturgical ministries. Please consider offering your time to serve God and our parish. There are signup sheets on the table in the Gathering Space for each Mass time.

ARE YOU CATHOLIC?

Are you sitting in a pew, on Sunday, with a spouse or a friend, but you are not Catholic? Would you like to know more about the Catholic Church and Church teachings? Is there someone you know who wants to become Catholic?  How does one decide if he or she wants to become Catholic? Adults become Catholic through the RCIA program or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The first step in RCIA is called Inquiry. Inquiry sessions are designed to answer questions regarding the Catholic Faith.  These meetings provide the fundamentals of what Catholics believe and the traditions of the church.  Inquiry is not a commitment to become Catholic rather it is a time for participants to determine if the Catholic religion is where God is calling them. On Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. we had our first Inquiry meeting for this year. Please join us; if you were unable to attend this first session but want to know more please contact Deacon Roger Pry or Mrs. Mary Pry to make special arrangements.  Deacon Pry can be reached at the parish office 614-920-1563 or Deacon and Mrs. Pry can be contacted at their home, 614-833-1817.
