TENTH ANNIVERSARY EVENTSThanks to all who attended the first anniversary event; the Town Hall Meeting on January 31, 2010. The second event concerns the commemorative bricks at the north entrance to our Gathering Space. These bricks were sold as a fund raiser when the building was under construction. All proceeds went to the building fund. Since we have many families who have joined the parish after that time, we want to reopen the commemorative brick sale. We value our new parishioners, and want to give them an opportunity to be represented along with the others. Pope John XXIII has always been a welcoming community which celebrates the importance of all its members. Please see the order forms in the Gathering Space for more information. As before, all proceeds of the sales will go to the building fund. The deadline for ordering is the end of April, so that the engraving and installation can be done prior to the big party on June 13.
FIRST EUCHARIST-PARENT MEETINGAll parents of children in second grade or older, who have not made their first communion, are invited to attend a meeting on Thursday, February 18, 2010, at 7:00 pm. We will be explaining the preparation process, time line, etc. and will be distributing the necessary materials. Please make every effort to be present so that you will be able to assist your child in getting ready for this beautiful Sacrament MOLD REMEDIATION UPDATEWe want to share with you an update report regarding the problem we encountered a year ago last spring with mold in the mechanical rooms on the lower level of our building. Originally condensation was thought to be the cause of the mold, but subsequent investigation showed that water was penetrating the building during certain weather conditions. Over the following year there was much work on the exterior of the building to correct the situation. Once the building work was finished we watched over the winter and spring seasons to make sure that the building was completely dry. Now we are doing a final investigation to find and remediate any remaining mold. So far it appears that there is minimal work necessary. We will give you a final update when the work is complete.
ASH WEDNESDAY MASS AND ECUMENICAL SERVICEOn Ash Wednesday, February 17, 2010, our Mass and distribution of ashes will be at 8:00 am. THE CATHOLIC TIMES - PARISH COLLECTION TIMEThe month of February is our parish collection for the Catholic Times weekly newspaper. Donation envelopes for this collection are included in the February collection packet. Unfortunately the envelope says $15 but the Catholic Times has raised their rate to $17 per year. The Catholic Times lets readers receive a Catholic perspective on the world around us: local, national, worldwide, and Vatican news; diocesan, parish, and school stories; articles, regular columns, editorials, and events are delivered right to your home. As an evangelization tool, Bishop Campbell and Monsignor Frecker encourage every Catholic family to receive the Catholic Times. Due to circumstances beyond their control some families are not able to contribute. If you are in a position to contribute a little more to help offset these costs it will be greatly appreciated.
PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION NEWSPlease follow the parking and traffic flow instructions of the PSR attendants and be considerate for our children’s safety as they come and go for their classes. Also as Mass is being celebrated during dismissal times we ask that all students and adults stay to the west side of the building in order not to disturb those attending Mass. The PSR curriculum reinforces the Mass and Scripture readings. It is not appropriate for children to enter Mass after PSR or wait outside in the Gathering Space for their parents to finish Mass. The children need to be taught to attend the entire Mass each Sunday. Thank you for your cooperation.

HATS, GLOVES, SCARVES & MITTENS FOR ST. LAWRENCE HAVENThe Christian Services and Social Concerns Commission will be collecting scarves, hats, gloves and mittens for all sizes that will be donated to St. Lawrence Haven for the needy. There will be labeled collection boxes in the Gathering Space for your items until February 26, 2010. Please continue with your Christmas spirit and remember those in need especially as the weather becomes more inclement. As always we appreciate your continued support for our projects. If there are any questions please contact Maribeth Zappia.
H1N1 VIRUSIn anticipation of flu season we are taking some precautions during our celebration of the Liturgy. First of all, there will be hand sanitizer available on the table in the Gathering Space, and we encourage all of our parishioners to use it before Mass. Also hand sanitizer will be on the credence table in the sanctuary, and all Eucharistic Ministers will use it immediately before distribution of communion. The Holy Water fonts will be cleaned and sanitized each week and fresh water will be added and blest. We will continue the Sign of Peace, but if you choose not to shake hands, simply fold your hands and say to the person next to you, “Peace be with your.” All should understand the reason for this and not see it as rude or unfriendly. We will also continue the distribution of communion under both species, but you always have, as in the past, the option to receive under the form of bread only if you wish. However, it is not permissible to dip the host into the wine. RECITATION OF THE ROSARYRecitation of the Rosary for the Year of the Priest has been changed to the fourth Sunday of each month, in the Church after the conclusion of the 8:30 am Mass. Please join us as we pray that God will strengthen our priests and bishops for their ministry and that they will be filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit.

SANDWICH SATURDAYWe need to remember those that are less fortunate who are hungry and need our assistance. Our parish family prepares and donates thousand of sandwiches each year for the less fortunate. The display in the Gathering Space has the needed supplies. If you are able to bring more that is greatly appreciated. There is always a place for new assemblers, as well as donations of bologna, cheese singles, and fresh bread. These supplies are very much appreciated. You’ll find it’s a truly rewarding way to spend less than an hour on the fourth Saturday of each month. Hope to see you here.
CONFIRMATIONConfirmation will be celebrated on June 5, 2010 at the 5:00 pm Mass. Recently a letter was sent to those in our parish who will be in the eighth grade during the 2009-2010 school year inviting them to begin their preparation for this sacrament. If you are in the eighth grade and did not receive this letter, or you are in the ninth grade or above and have not been confirmed, and wish to receive the sacrament, please contact the office, 614-920-1563.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITYOur Parish Habitat for Humanity project continues on Saturdays weather permitting. All those currently signed up will be contacted as needed. FIRST THURSDAY CELEBRATIONS DEDICATED TO THE “YEAR OF THE PRIEST”Based on the Apostolic Penitentiary decreed by Pope Benedict XVI, Bishop Frederick F. LARGE VERSION WORSHIP AID For those who would like a large print worship aid, please ask the usher for a copy.
LITURGICAL MINISTER SCHEDULESPlease pick-up your Liturgical Minister Schedule from the table in the Gathering Space. This helps save postage costs. Thank you.
CANAL WINCHESTER FOOD PANTRYThe new director of the Canal Winchester Food Pantry, Janet Richardson, has announced that the Food Pantry is converting to a new model of service called the "Choice" model currently being used by many food pantries across the nation. The clients are escorted into the Food Pantry shelves which have been arranged to coincide with a card which uses USDA guidelines to guide people on choosing the correct number of items from each food group for their size of families. This allows the clients to choose their preferences and provide basic special diet needs much more than before. When certain items are needed, we can now maintain an inventory system that will be more specific to the general population of clients. This particular model also saves space in our facility, and uses less, but more specific volunteer time working with the people directly. Relationship is also our mission to the community. Volunteers needed! Our need for increments of time as small as 2 hours a week, needed primarily on Monday and Friday afternoons from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. which is the preferred time for most of our clients. We will be having food distribution two or more (as need dictates) Wednesdays a month from 4:00 - 6:00 pm to accommodate both working clients and volunteers. TELEVISED & RADIO MASSMass is televised each week day at 8:00 am & 7:00 pm from Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Birmingham, Ala. and at 10:00 am on Catholic TV from Notre Dame’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The Sunday Mass from the Basilica can be seen at 11:45 am at http://basilica.nd.edu/. Sunday Mass sponsored by the Columbus Diocese can be seen at 7:00 am on WHIZ 18 and at 7:30 am on WWHO 53. St. Gabriel Radio broadcasts the Mass on 1580 AM radio at Noon.
ART & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE Whether you have an eye for color, knowledge of flowers or just can lend a hand to help decorate the church then the Art & Environment Committee is looking for you! We are currently planning the Easter Season and would welcome your input. Please contact Laura Ankrom if you are interested or have any questions.
NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDWe are in need of adult volunteers for our Nursery/Child Care ages 9 mos. to 4 years old for all Masses, 8:30 am-10:15 am & 12 Noon. This ministry is open to any adult in the parish whether you have children or your children are grown. We are a very young parish and want to help our young families attend Mass comfortably. Many hands make light work, if we have a lot of volunteers then the time commitment is not as great, please try to help. Contact Jennifer Koehler or call Regina in the parish office 614-920-1563.
CATHOLIC TIMESIt is the wish of Monsignor Frecker for all Pope John XXIII parishioners to receive the Catholic Times. He has diligently worked with the diocese to make this available to all those families who register at Pope John XXIII. If you have received the Catholic Times previously and are not receiving it now, or if you have registered and have not received it please call the parish office to let us know. We will contact the Catholic Times office to make the adjustment. We will have the diocesan wide subscription renewal in February.
CARING STITCHESCaring Stitches volunteers meet on the third Tuesday each month from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Social Hall. Anyone with skills pertaining to sewing, knitting, or crocheting are welcome as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these skills. Our projects include items for the homeless, Children’s Hospital, and other charitable organizations. Also any donations of yarns, material, batting, or fiberfill are more than appreciated. If you have any questions please contact Maribeth Zappia.
CARING HEARTS MINISTRYVisitation to Persons in Hospitals, Nursing/Rehabilitation Facilities and the Homebound – Government regulations surrounding the privacy of individuals in health related matters prevent Health Care Institutions from revealing patient names or circumstances to any other persons other than authorized by law. We rely on family and friends to inform the parish office when a loved one is hospitalized, becomes a resident of a nursing home, assisted living facility, rehabilitation facility or is homebound. Through a newly formed Caring Hearts Ministry arrangements can be made in a timely manner to visit persons who are in need of pastoral care, sacramental visits, and prayer. Please do not hesitate to inform the parish office in health care matters related to your family or loved ones. No one should be separated from the love of Christ!
CARE OF ALTAR LINENSWe are in need of one (1) more person to wash and iron the linens used during Mass. It is a commitment of once every eight (8) weeks. Please call Regina at the parish office 614-920-1563 or Carol Lasko if you are able to help. Carol's phone number is listed in the Parish Directory.
OUTREACH TO INACTIVE CATHOLICS Most of us have members of our family, friends, neighbors, or fellow workers who were once Catholic, but are no longer active in the practice of their faith. Our parish community wants to reach out to our inactive Catholic brothers and sisters. Available at our office are postcards that we ask you to use for this purpose. The postcard carries the address for the website www.OnceCatholic.org. A link to this website may also be found on our "Links" page. This is an interactive website designed for inactive Catholics who may be seeking a deeper connection to their faith. The postcard also carries the return address for Pope John XXIII Catholic Community as well as our phone number and website address. Please pickup as many postcards as you need, and address them to inactive friends, relatives, etc. whom you know. There is also a place for a personal message on the postcard if you wish.
ELIZABETH MINISTRIESHave you lost a child, miscarried, or know someone who has? Have you ever wanted a group of women that you can talk with and share in the miracle of the child that was given to you for a short time? Our dream is that this ministry will help the parish truly celebrate the gift of each child conceived and born, and fully mourn each miscarriage and infant/child death. This will be a strong witness to our belief in the dignity and worth of all life! By assisting those suffering infertility, encouraging those in the adoptive process, and supporting families experiencing an infant crisis, we will be a strong and consistent voice for life in our church, community, and world. For more information please email us at ppopejoh@insight.rr.com and put Elizabeth Ministries in the subject line.
OFFERINGSThank you for your continued support of our parish offertory and building fund. During these difficult economic times, we want you to know how much we appreciate the sacrifices you are making to maintain your commitment to your parish.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDWould you like to meet new people and renew old acquaintances? What better way than to volunteer to help serve donuts, coffee, tea, and juice as well as help set up or clean up for Hospitality/Name Tag Sunday on the third Sunday of each month. We need your help. Many hands make light work and when we volunteer to help a couple of times a year the commitment really isn’t too great for those of us with limited time to give. Please call Regina in the parish office and let us know that you can help. MILITARY UPDATE PRAYER FOR OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMENLord, hold our service men and women in your loving hands. Protect them, especially those who are in harms way. Bless them and their families for these selfless acts they perform for our Country in our time of need. Be with all people who suffer from the ravages of war. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savoir. Amen. Our parish family has many family members serving in the Armed Forces as well as others supporting our troops around the world, please keep them all in our prayers.
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDPope John XXIII Parish has been selected to receive the LifeCare Alliance’s prestigious volunteer award, the Community Service Award for the group’s longstanding voluntary service. This annual award was presented at the agency’s annual volunteer recognition event on Thursday, April 24, 2008 from 5:30-7:30 pm. The Appreciation Reception took place at the Meadow Park Church of God, 2425 Bethel Road. Thank you to all of our volunteers who service the community by delivering Meals on Wheels. God Bless All of You.
PAPER RECYCLING Please bring your newspapers, magazine, catalogs, office and school papers to the new yellow and green Abitibi Paper Retriever bin located next to our trash dumpster. Isn’t the color of this bin perfect for our church? Not only is this a wonderful Environmental stewardship program, we also earn money for the paper that is collected, and the more recyclable paper donated by our community the more funds we can raise. These funds will be used to offset the funds needed for various projects in our parish. Please put all shredded paper in a plastic bag so we don’t have all of it flying around. DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR PAPERS FOR THE RECYCLING BIN! GOD BLESS YOU, DANIELDear Parish, I have been serving my country for 4 and half years in the United States Navy and I am currently on deployment to go toward the Gulf, serving on the USS Germantown as a Engineman third class and I have only been back 2 times to visit the church. Though even with the little visits I have had, you have all been nice enough to take me into your arms and your heart and your lives. I have never been so touched in my whole life. When I am gone from home and I know so many people care for me and my fellow comrades in serving our country it brings a tear of joy in my eyes. When I saw all that the parish sent me I was shocked. I thought maybe a candy bar or two but instead almost enough to live on for a couple of months, and because of all of you and God in my heart, I have never been more honored to serve my country and represent my church and most of all my family which is probably sitting there now to my Dad, Donald Safreed, to my mom Jean Safreed, and to my sister in heaven in God’s arms Rachel Safreed. To wrap this up I just want everyone in the parish to know that I thank you so much for the stuff you sent to me but most of all not forgetting me in a time that I need God in my life the most and you have shown me that God works his magical way through us all, thank you again for your time. EN3 Daniel Safreed LITURGICAL MINISTERS NEEDEDWe are in need of Liturgical Ministers for all of the Masses but particularly the 5:00 pm and 12 Noon Masses. High School students who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation are encouraged to volunteer as a Lector or Eucharistic Minister; of course there is a need as well for Altar Servers and Greeter/Ushers. Any student who is in the fourth grade and above is encouraged to become an Altar Server. Adults are encouraged to volunteer for any of the liturgical ministries. Please consider offering your time to serve God and our parish. There are signup sheets on the table in the Gathering Space for each Mass time.
ARE YOU CATHOLIC?Are you sitting in a pew, on Sunday, with a spouse or a friend, but you are not Catholic? Would you like to know more about the Catholic Church and Church teachings? Is there someone you know who wants to become Catholic? How does one decide if he or she wants to become Catholic? Adults become Catholic through the RCIA program or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The first step in RCIA is called Inquiry. Inquiry sessions are designed to answer questions regarding the Catholic Faith. These meetings provide the fundamentals of what Catholics believe and the traditions of the church. Inquiry is not a commitment to become Catholic rather it is a time for participants to determine if the Catholic religion is where God is calling them. On Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. we had our first Inquiry meeting for this year. Please join us; if you were unable to attend this first session but want to know more please contact Deacon Roger Pry or Mrs. Mary Pry to make special arrangements. Deacon Pry can be reached at the parish office 614-920-1563 or Deacon and Mrs. Pry can be contacted at their home, 614-833-1817.
